MBR sistemlerinde biyolojik olarak arıtılan atıksu,reaktör içine yerleştirilen membran lifleriyle filtre edilir. MBR sistemlerinin arıtma verimleri diğer sistemlere göre oldukça yüksektir. Bu nedenle MBR sistemiyle arıtılan suları kullanım amacına bağlı olarak tekrar kullanılabilir. MBR sistemleri evsel ve endüstriyel atıksuların arıtılmasında ihtiyaca uygun olarak değişik kapasitelerde modüler veya betonarme olarak dizayn edilebilir.
